Opioid Settlement Dollars Are Waiting
At least $50 billion will be distributed nationally from lawsuits resulting in opioid abatement settlement agreements. These funds can be used in jails to fund essential services such as intake medical screening, addiction treatment, and re-entry programs. However, settlement dollars will not be available forever and the process to access these funds varies by state.
Decide what you want to fund
The first step in securing funding is to decide what services you want covered in your jail. Do you want to cover existing services or start a new program? Many states have created lists of approved services that qualify for settlement funds. You can check your state’s resources on this tracker. You may be surprised to find that a wide range of services are eligible. Decide what you want to fund.
Not sure what you need?
Write the proposal
Once you know what you want to fund, you’ll need to follow your state’s application process. Many states and localities require a grant or Request for Proposal (RFP) process to receive funding. You can see a list of available grants on the Legal Action Center’s grant tracker. Your proposal should generally outline the services you wish to fund and the estimated cost. Click here for support to help you write the proposal. The application process differs by state, so include your state when you reach out.
