Body Scanners Are Not X-Ray Machines

Body scanners are common in correctional facilities, but they can be misunderstood . Body scanners cannot be used for medical diagnostics. These machines are for contraband detection, not medical care.

Body scanners can’t diagnose broken bones

Body scanners are designed to detect contraband, not to diagnose illness. The technology behind a body scanner works differently than a medical x-ray machine. Even though it may look like you can see bones on a body scanner, they cannot provide a full view of internal medical issues. Since they’re not medical devices, results are limited and cannot be used to rule out or detect health problems. If a detainee seems to show concerning symptoms, send them out for appropriate evaluation instead of relying on a scanner.

Even if a facility has access to a medical x-ray machine, only licensed professionals can perform the scan and interpret the results. Radiologists are the only professionals who can diagnose broken bones. Body scanners are not a substitute for x-ray services.  Body scanners can’t diagnose broken bones.
